Color Theory Basics: How Colors Work Together
Color theory sounds academic, but at its core it is just a set of reliable patterns for choosing colors that look good together. Once you understand the wheel and a handful of harmony types, picking a palette stops being guesswork.
The color wheel
The color wheel arranges hues in a circle so that their relationships become visual. The three primary colors — red, yellow and blue in traditional theory, or red, green and blue on screens — are the starting points. Mixing neighbours produces secondary colors, and mixing a primary with an adjacent secondary produces the tertiary colors that fill in the rest of the circle.
What makes the wheel useful is position. Colors sitting opposite each other behave very differently from colors sitting side by side, and almost every matching technique is really just a rule about where on the wheel to look next.
The three properties of a color
Every color can be described by three dimensions, and learning to think in these terms makes palettes far easier to reason about:
- Hue — the color's position on the wheel: red, orange, green, blue, and so on.
- Saturation — how pure or vivid the color is. High saturation is intense; low saturation drifts toward grey.
- Lightness (or brightness/value) — how light or dark the color is, from black through the pure hue to white.
Two colors can share a hue yet feel completely different because their saturation or lightness differs. This is exactly why a single base color can produce an entire range of usable tints and shades.
The main color harmonies
A harmony is a recipe for choosing companion colors by rotating around the wheel from a base hue. These are the ones worth knowing:
Complementary
Two hues directly opposite each other (180° apart). This pairing has the highest possible contrast, which makes it striking — ideal for an accent or call-to-action against a dominant color, but tiring if used in equal amounts.
Analogous
Three hues sitting next to each other (around 30° apart). Because they share underlying color, analogous schemes feel calm and cohesive. They are a safe choice for backgrounds and gentle gradients.
Triadic
Three hues evenly spaced around the wheel (120° apart). Triadic schemes stay vibrant and balanced at the same time. Let one hue lead and use the other two sparingly.
Split-complementary
A base hue plus the two colors on either side of its complement. You keep the energy of a complementary contrast but reduce the clash, which makes it more forgiving than a straight complement.
Tetradic
Four hues forming a rectangle or square on the wheel. This gives you a rich, flexible set — but with four strong colors in play, you almost always want one dominant color and the rest as support.
Monochromatic
A single hue explored through different saturations and lightness levels. Monochromatic palettes are elegant and almost impossible to get wrong, which is why they show up so often in clean, minimal designs.
Warm and cool colors
The wheel also splits into warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows) and cool colors (greens, blues, purples). Warm colors tend to feel energetic and advance toward the viewer; cool colors feel calmer and recede. Balancing temperature is a quick way to control the mood of a design.
